Question:

I am planning a dry bar in my basement, but I'm not much of a carpenter (especially cabinetry). I've been considering the use of stock base cabinets and building up from there to create a bar.

Answer:

This is a great idea and I've used it in the past. The nicest part of it is that while the bar should be no higher than 42", the kitchen cabinets are only 30" or 16" if you want to install a bar sink. Most kitchen cabinet boxes can also be cut to any depth 13" or less and in whatever configuration you might want. This can give you a nice rounded front while still having a straight cabinet line when you stand behind it. The front can even be upholstered because you have tons of space there. The bar top will be 16" or 18" wide so you have a convenient front with enough left to overhang and mask the cabinets at the back. A 10" (or so) toe-kick at the front still gives you a couple of inches to fur the top and still not interfere with opening and closing cabinet doors. You can even include a bar sink if you want.
