Is there a type of sealant that we could use rather than paint? There's no actual water in the basement we just get efflorescence coming through a few small cracks.

I haven't heard of anything like that but a good masonry supply outlet will be able to tell you more. I don't know where you're calling me from so I don't know what climatic conditions have to be taken into account - they will.
