My family room ceiling after 13 years started to crack and bubble but when we're starting to fix these areas, my son found that if you touched other areas it was also letting go from the gyproc. The thing is the gyproc underneath the stipple is as clean as a whistle. You can even see the pencil marks from when it was first stippled. This room was repainted in 2001 due to an oil furnace that had a hole in it, which was blowing up black soot particles for about two years. A very reliable paint store sold me a sealer that needed to be applied to the ceiling and walls in this room before it was repainted. This sealer had alcohol in it and I am wondering if this is what caused the stippling to let go.
Answer:
Rather than blaming the paint, I think it is time to look at the painter. That ceiling should have been primed and painted before it was textured. If there was no primer, the paint stuck to the ceiling more by suction than absorbtion and now it is letting go. Time will do that. Besides priming and painting, the texture should have a litre of paint mixed with it as it is being stirred and that will have it stay in place.
