Question:

We're trying to achieve a dark mahogany/chocolate finish on some pieces that we are refinishing. We've found a stain that we like, and the colour is coming up nicely, but we're having problems with the final varnish... we just can't seem to get that "silky smooth" feel to the finished piece. What's the best way to apply a finish varnish, and what kind of varnish/acrylic should we use?

Answer:

Perhaps the varnish you're using is not a 'furniture finish' product. You might check with your supplied for this and you may have little choice but to use and oil-based product.
