Question:

We are having a 1996 sq ft, two storey house built and would like to know if there is a rule of thumb on the size of the air conditioner unit. The sub-contractor said that for the size of the house, we need a 2.5 ton air conditioner. I asked another company and they indicated that a 2 ton was big enough for the size of our house. I don't want the house to be hot upstairs in the summer but I also heard that if the air conditioner is too large, it will not work cool properly.

Answer:

I think your first contact was closer to the mark. The rule of thumb is to have a ton for each 800 sq.ft. of floor space.
