Our single storey, trussed roof cottage was built in 1971 from a pre-fab kit. The cottage is 24' * 32'. The trusses are 2*4 (the roof header is 2*6) with metal joints and span the 24' direction. We have recently added an extension to take the place of the 3 tiny bedrooms in the original cottage. We want to turn the entire original cottage into a great room. Do we need a header and supports in order to remove the wall that separates the front 12' from the back 12'?
Answer:
This type of construction often needs some form of support to replace the centre wall if you're going to take it out. The metal 'joiners' in the centre often do not have the structural integrity to support the whole span. I'd want to take the drawings to an architect before I would monkey with it.
