Question:

Am considering purchasing a 'historical board' protected home, a small cottage style home (approx. 1400 sf, exclusive of basement. The home is very manageable as far as the overall scope of renovation work, but has one major concern. The foundation requires lifting, or repair in order to correct the misallignment of the walls and structure, casusing them to go off square plane over the years. The home was built in 1890's, and has a rubble foundation now. I am wondering what the overall costs may be, and what the approach from the foundation contractor might be in tackling this job.
Asking an expert who can answer an advanced question, with some confidence, is why I have come to Homefocus, and am hoping you can provide some direction.

Answer:

Cost is something that has to be determined on site and no amount of guessing at a distance can compare even remotely to it. The approach will probably be to lift the house, remove the existing foundation walls and pur new ones on the footings if they're there. If they are not there, new footing too will have to be put in. The way your house has shifted suggests that perhaps footings were not a part of original construction.
