Question:

I heard your radio show on Saturday and wondered if you can help me. I live in Hamilton, Ontario and my house faces due west. The paint on the bottom of the first and second floor windows at the front of the house and the bottom of the garage door continually peels. Several times over the last few years I have taken all the paint off with a torch, sanded, primed and repainted but by the end of the winter the paint is peeling again. I notice that the wood is deeply grained and I was wondering if I needed to fill these with some kind of wood filler before I paint them again. Any suggestions on what I can fill them with? Any suggestions on a process I can use to get paint to stay on?

Answer:

Once you take the paint off, you need to let the wood dry out more before priming and painting. Right now the paint you're applying is sitting on top of the wood and as the wood release moisture and air, it pops the paint. Filling the deep grain won't do it, you have to let it dry and then do the priming.
