Question:

I have a window problem in that the bottom plate (that I can see from the outside of the house) is totally rotted away. Carpentry is not my forte`, but I do know how to cut a straight line with a saw and still have all my fingers. I am sure that the window must come out, but do not know how or where to start this. Could you Please give a novice an in-depth lesson or point me in the direction of another of the experts so they may help?

Answer:

The first thing yo8u do is go over to your favorite big box store and take a look at a similar window so you can see how its constructed - things have not changed much in this field. This bit of education will permit you to remove the window intact and do your repairs before putting it back in.
