Question:

My entrance door from the garage to the house opens into the house, no surprises here! The problem I have is the landing behind the door immediately drops 13 steps into the basement. I am teriffied that one of these days someone is going to open the door and hit someone taking off there shoes behind the door and send them tumbling down the stairs. Can I replace this door so it opens into the garage instead of opening into the house. Will it pass code?

Answer:

Because codes are such minimum standards I don't like to pay much attention to them so I don't know if this would fall within the National Building Code or not but I see less of a problem in installing a long window in that door to make sure that people can see who is on the other side.
