Question:

I have four slylights in my house- one in the living room, one the dining room, one in the kitchen and one in the master batthroom. None of the the skylights leak and they do not open. However in the winter time they do sweat and this has created mold on the paint that surround the skylights. First what can i do to clean the mold off? and, What can I do to prevent future mold from showing up. I do have several ceiling fans that run 24-7 all year around already.

Answer:

Warm air ends up on the skylight lens because warm air displaces cooler air. The lens is an ideal place for it to condense because there is a major temperature difference from one side of it to the other. About the only remedy I've found here is to install a fabricated 4X4 beam inside the skylight well and high enough up to accommodate a large diameter ceiling fan. The beam is wired and installed firmly because the fan will need that kind of support. Neither should the fan ever be turned off. It will blow air downward at slow speed keeping the well cooler and getting away from it causing condensation to form. Once you dry it all out the mold will go away.

In the interests of retaining credibility and in fairness to all, I cannot recommend prices, people nor companies for various projects.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
