Recently we had an installer come out to measure for a storm door at the back of our house. That exterior door is a steel french door facing east. Almost immediately, he told us installation of a storm door would be virtually impossible due to the door frame. The complete frame is aluminum on all three sides and the step is double capped. He said a strong wind would blow the storm door off its frame, wouldn't touch the other doors either if we wanted storm doors for them in future, and could only recommend the whole frame be ripped off and redone with wood.
Answer:
There should be no need to replace the whole thing if the present door opens inward. Another contractor might be able to see it your way.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
