Question:

New vinyl windows are very expensive. I have been told that wooden windows in good shape can be vinyl capped much cheaper. This would save painting.

Answer:

You're absolutely right but rather than vinyl, my suggestion would be aluminum capping. In the past, I've seen vinyl substantially weakened when creased in this way. No such thing has been found with aluminum.
