Question:
I'm replacing my 30-yr. old brown doors with new colonial white ones: this should be a simple procedure but for some reason I have problems. These doors (new) have the hole drilled for doorknob, and the indentation made in the door for 3 hinges (2 would be fine). Each door I encounter the same thing: I have to slightly force it to close: it rests open about an inch. I've tried changing the hinges every which way but no change: any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Answer:
By the sound of it, the hinge plates that attach to the doorjamb are sunken farther than they need be. You might want to try introducing a sheet of shoebox cardboard under each plate to bring it out a bit. There could also be a problem with the paint in the corner of where doorjamb meets door stop along the hinge side. These are about the only two reasons I can see for the problem.
