Question:

I am planning on replacing a 6' sliding patio door in my kitchen. Do I need to install self adhesive flashing? Should i add more building wrap or vapour barrier?

Answer:

The door manufacturer will dictate the flashing and either tarpaper or housewrap should be installed to repair the damage done by taking the old one out. Vapour barrier on the hand, is a different animal. I would want it to overlap the VB that's there (on the inside) and extend to almost the doorjamb edge of the casing as this is the area where most of your air exfiltration will take place without it. I'd even go a step farther and ensure that the edges of the VB are sunken into a bead of caulking compound.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
