Question:

I am currently interested in replacing windows in my entire house. I have some contractors coming out to give me bids on the job. Currently, I have a 100 year old home and my windows are all the old originals, i.e. they are still on a weighting system. Unfortunately, I do not know much about windows and would like to ask my contractors some educated questions concerning this job. What is your best advice as to specific brands of windows and questions to ask the contractors. I would really like to be sure these windows are going to last and that cold or hot air will not be seeping out.

Answer:

I do not get into brand names for obvious reasons but if you go with extruded vinyl, thermally sealed units, you'll be on the right track. An interesting question here whether they plan to use foam or fibre insulation for the sealing the edges under the trim. Too many of the foam products are temperture sensitive so they're liable to shrink back just when you need them the most.
