Question:

Our home requires new windows. There are a tremendous number of manufacturers and distributors out there. We realize that windows have technologically advanced in the last number of years. What characteristics would you look for in new windows for your home? With so many people that claim to be experts in the field, is there any short list of "window experts" that you would recommend, or better yet have them install their windows on your house at a reasonable cost?

Answer:

Extruded vinyl has about taken over the market for replacement windows I think and with good cause. The glass itself can be set into a frame of almost anything and doesn't normally deteriorate so that part of it is not a problem. The frame and other features on the other hand can mean a lot. I look for at least a half-inch space between glazings on a thermally sealed unit. I like the idea of double-hung and the vinyl ones are most easily made that way. I also want to be able to clean the outsides of the windows from inside the house which means they have to flip over. This also permits me to replace weather stripping when necessary on the better ones. Brands and people I cannot recommend but I'm sure this website will be able to provide you with a list.
