Question:

I love your shows on Saturdays and I have learned a lot. I am a single Mom and I feel I need to become knowledgable so I will not let sales people sell me a line. Thank you so much. I need to replace my windows and I am talking to several sales people. They all have the best window. One person told me that the vinyl casings where the glass sits in is empty inside and his has some kind of foam insulation to fill that space and thus keeps the heat in or out much more effectively. Is it really that big of a difference, especially if the price is quite a bit more?

Answer:

There's a lot more than that to the difference between manufacturers' units. The extruded vinyl is presently the most practical up-grade but there are other considerations too - the greater the spacing between sheets of glass the better, the neater the weld on the corners the better, there are also various gasses that are introduced between the sheets and most of these are worth considering. These are but a few of the things you have to consider.

Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
