Listen to your show often and living in a century old home with stained glass I wish somehow to insulate my windows. I will be replacing the old leaded glass with new double pane windows, but due to the way the stained glass is in place and its age, (still in excellent shape) it does not allow me to facilitae the removal without complete damage to the stained glass. So I was wondering if it was resonable to avoid condensation and heat build up on the stained glass by putting a double glazed sealed unit on the inside of the stained glass about 1 inch from the stained glass itself. Or would it be more prudent to have a sealed unit on the inside and outside with the stained glass between, or a sealed unit just on the outside of the stained glass. Also the storm windows will still be in place.
Answer:
The secret to keeping condensation off windows is to keep the exterior glazing leaking just a bit more than the inside. This creates a good air exchange between the glazings and condenstion will not form. You might consider how much the existing windows leak air and if a good air exchange can be arranged, I'd go for it. This is a system I have not tried but 'theoretically' it sounds great.
