Question:

I have a 1927 bungalow with 7 nice-sized basement windows. The floor-joists sit on top of a 1-by-something header on top of the window frame. The window with frame is 24.5" high and 43.5" wide. Most of the windows still open but compression is obvious. Is a header replacement possible and if so, what should I use.

Answer:

Header replacement in cases like this is all but out of the question. A support post in the middle of the width of the window on the other hand, is easy - just jack and install.
