I live in a basement room, and the window in the room is the old style sliding glass panes. In the winter time, this window lets in quite a bit of cold air, and also lets heat out. Couple this with one wall of my room being part of the garage, it gets mighty cold in here. Is there any way to seasonally seal up that window without damaging the exterior paint? I was thinking of a sheet of vapour barrier taped over the whole thing, but I'm wortried about removing the tape in the spring. Could you suggest something and a way to anchor it to the house?
Answer:
You can get the 'heat shrink' clear pastic that is applied not to the wood trim but to the plaster around the wood trim of the window. Removing it in the spring will entail the use of a heat gun so it can be done neatly. Putting it on the inside will also avoid ice forming on the window because the outside layer of glass will leak a bit more than the inside layer.
