Question:

Am putting in a 30" wide basement window. What size of angle iron would you suggest as a header. house is a 15 year old bungalow with brick siding. Is it possibble to use a metal sheet (ie. 1" think and 8" wide not lying on end) or would this buckle?

Answer:

That might buckle. A 30" window normally requires no more than 2 2X8s nailed and cleated. If you're using angle iron to support the bricks, 4X4" and 3/8" thick would do it. Remember, I am not an engineer. I am a handyman and we always overkill everything.
