Question:

The building is about 15 years old with a southerly exposure subject to driving rains every so often. It is two story, chalet-type, with doors on both levels, one above the other. Both doors are solid cedar and the weather stripping has been replace several times. Despite this we still get water seeping in on both levels. The upstairs doors is of particular concern since the water eventually seeps through and ruins the ceiling downstairs. As alternatives, we are considering simply adding aluminum storm doors at both entrances, which would of course detract from the aesthetics, or installing metal clad doors complete with jam without the storm doors.

Answer:

My first thought is to modify the sill and door bumper system on both doors (particularly the upper one). If there is presently a bumper that the door closes against, I would certainly change that and make sure that water running down the door has somewhere to go besides into the crevice created by the rubber bumper and the door. A neoprene sweep under the door on the inside will do away with the need for it.
