i just bought a house, 30 yrs. old, with aluminium wiring. we have a fuse box and the house inspector said we should get a qualified electrician to apply some "goo; TO THE WIRES TO PREVENT EXPANSION OF THE WIRING WHICH CAN CAUSE THE WIRES TO LOOSEN AT THEIR CONNECTION,RE: THERMAL EXPANSION. WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT ALUMINUM WIRING? IS IT SAFE? WHAT ARE YOUR SUGESTIONS?
Answer:
You should know that you cannot mix aluminum and copper in the same twist fastener and that which a light or a plug or a switch or anything else does something it should not (heat, blink, on or off when it shouldn't, etc.) a documented electrician should be on the job to confirm the integrity of the whole system. This may be done only once every four or five years but it certainly is worth it. I have aluminum wiring and an electrican who is a very good friend.
