Question:

I am replacing an existing light fixture in the kitchen. I removed the old light and noticed that it was hooked up only to two white wires not a black one and a white one. If I hook it up exactly the same it works but I am concerned if this is proper. Why are there two white wires and not any black going to it.

Answer:

One of the white wires must go directly to the switch. When a switch is introduced, it is a mere extension of the black (hot) wire inside the cable.
