Question:

I want to improve the lighting on the stairs to my basement. The stairwell is under the stairs going to the second story and enclosed on both sides and is 3 feet wide with minimum head room. I am looking for advice on types of lights, being mindful of the codes, I could install recessed in the walls or the overhead slope from the stairs above.

Answer:

Lighting will be just as effective and easier to install recessed into the wall(s).
