Question:

We live in Pickering, Ontario in an older established neighbourhood. This summer the town will be installing storm and sanitary sewers and burying all of the hydro, telephone lines. We need to start getting quotes for having the house hooked up to the new system when it is completed. Could you assist us with the types of things we should be asking/looking for? We have never had a water problem or dampness problem in the basement. We do not have a sump pump although most of our neighbours do - we are set about 20 feet closer to the road than the other homes on our street.

Answer:

You local city hall, Buildings Branch will be able to tell you how to go about it. In fact, they may very well insist because rules differ from one municipality to another. There are qualified people in your community to do the job properly. Because this is not normally a do-it-yourself project, I suggest a group of you get together and hire a contractor to look after several houses under one contract.
