Question:

I am considering upgrading my electrical system in my home from 60 amp service to 100 amp service, but i have no idea what is involved. What are the steps to tackle a project like this and could a person with limited knowledge in this area accomplich this task or should I contract an electrician?

Answer:

The key word in you submission is 'limited' and for that reason, I suggest you get in touch with an electrician. Are you prepared to have a house without electricity for a day or two? Although it can be done as a DIY project in Ontario, not all jurisdictions are as considerate. You have not only the electrical panel to change, you have to change the conductors leading from the hydro pole to the house too under normal circumstances. Again, not in all jurisdictions are you permitted to climb the pole and do this yourself. When you apply for the electrical permit, and you have to have one, you should be able to get complete instructions as to what will be expected of you (or your electrician).
