Question:

I have a problem with one circuit in my house. Nothing on the circuit seems to work, however using a meter I probe 120 volts on both the live side of the cicuit and the neutral side. A friend tells me there must be a break in the neutral side of the cicuit somewhere along the way which is preventing the circuit from being complete. What do you think? What are my best troubleshooting options? No changes have been made to the system in recent times that could have caused this.

Answer:

Yet you can be sure there is a break somewhere along the line because the circuit is not complete and with that, you have no power. In a normal situation, I don't think you should be registering anything like 120V on the neutral side. Neither do I like to monkey with these things once confusion sets in so I'd call an electrican.
