We are doing a basement renovation and are investigating upgrading our fuse panel to circuit breakers. One decision we have is whether to stay with the current 100A or upgrade to 200A. I'm told by my electrician, the costs are almost double! Roughly $2Gs vs $3500 for everything. What are new homes being installed with? We are not planning on putting in a spa. Are there any advantages to going with the 200A over the 100A service?
Answer:
I find the price spread quoted to you between the two to be a bit on the heavy side. New homes in most areas are built with 100 Amp. service but I've not heard of anyone being unhappy with 200 Amp. service once they have it. This can also become a rather inviting selling feature should such be in your future.
Remember, even if you don’t do your own work around the house have to hire someone, you put yourself at a great advantage when you can intelligently discuss a project with the various trades people.
