Question:
When I removed the strip lighting bar I discovered that there is no junction box in the wall. The wires are merely pulled through a sizable hole in the wallboard and the light fixture mounting bar is only screwed to the wallboard on either side of the hole. Does this type of installation in a six year old house in Ontario meet code? It seems rather shabby considering the builder is one of the highest rated in Ontario. Since the new fixture definitely requires a junction box for mounting, is there an easy way to install a junction box and have it centred over the vanity?

I never both with codes because I look more at functionality instead so you might want to get in touch with your local hydry authority for that one. To install the box for the new light, you'll have to have access to the framework behind the drywall and that may mean removing a certain amount of it and then replacing and doing a proper repair job.
