Question:

We have an existing fireplace in our basement family room and we would like to convert it to something more efficient for heating our bungalow. Would it be cheaper to install a new wood burning stove rather than put in a fireplace insert and what would be the best way to get the heat to the main floor, we were thinking of grates in the floor. The house is in the country and heated with electricity - no gas available.

Answer:

I wouldn't take too long putting in a gas (propane) fired fireplace there. Your idea of grates will work but you'll have to have something like a small fan to move the heat toward them.
