I want to run some wiring for a receptacle for an over-the-range microwave. I want to use an existing circuit that is currently in the crawl space directly under the kitchen. The existing circuit currently only has two plugs on it in the crawl space. I plan on eliminating these plugs so that the micro can have its own dedicated circuit. The cable for this existing circuit is already long enough to run up to the microwave. It's a 12/2 copper NMW 60 cable. It runs to a 15 amp fuse. Is it ok to use a NMW 60 cable for this purpose? Most cables I see are NM 90. Is it ok to use a 12/2 cable? Other cables in the house are 14/2. Like I mentioned, it's on a 15 amp fuse, so I would guess that it should be ok.
Answer:
Provided it has a ground element, 12/2 is certainly good here and you can even put a 20 Amp. fuse on it if you have to. Only your local electrical power authority can tell you if NMW cable fits the bill. Some of municiple authorities are more finicky than others but they're all there to save your life and mine so its a good idea to follow their rules.
