Question:

In the early 70's, developers used aluminium wiring in residential developments. Later it was determined that there is a risk of fire at the point of aluminium/copper joins i.e. switches, outlets and light boxes and I believe that aluminium wiring was forbidden. Since it is unrealistic if not impossible to pull all aluminium wiring out of a house, one prescribed solution is to "copper pigtail" every aluminium/copper connection in the house. Another is to use the "approved" connectors. I have heard that one should be able to do it yourself. I am fairly handy around the house, including electrical stuff so I am wondering if you have any recommendations

Answer:

I did exactly that in the house that I have now lived in for almost ten years but the connectors I used were not ceramic, they were specifically manufactured to joint aluminum to copper. I had it inspected too and that is something you should not forego. Get a wiring permit from your local power authority and as you get the permit, you'll also get a list of instructions as to what will be expected.
