Question:

Our 8 year old backsplit bungalow has a mosty smell in basement we have no water problems we have a dehumidifier we had the duct work cleaned in case it was a mouse weve checked gas furnace hot water tank cleaned central vac checked floor drains we think the smell showed up 4 weeks ago but now were not sure because when we open all windows the smell is gone for 24/48 hrs the smell for no reason gets very strong at different time and I cant pin it down why. It smells the worst above the ceiling tiles in basement the dishwasher and sink is above this area but in a bedroom that as drywall under it i can take a flashlight and look down the beams all I see is pipes and insulation the previous owners partially insullated the floor in this area for sound the insulation does not look wet when the smell is strong i will lift a tile and it is defenitely stronger in this area but other times i can lift a tile and it does not smell any worse I dont no what to do next can you suggest any thing

Answer:

You're going to have to keep looking. It sounds too much like a mould problem to me even though you say you do not have a moisture problem so when you're looking, try to keep that in mind.
