I am having a major problem covering the odor from a bad batch of paint. Earlier this month I painted a bedroom/office using an oil base semi gloss. The smell after the second coat had dried was very strong and caused sore throats, burning eyes and sinuses. We opened the bedroom window and used fans to vent the room for over a week but the smell still persisted. I took the remaining paint back to the store for an exchange. Repainting the room with 2 more coats of the new mix of oil base semi gloss most of the strong smell is gone but 2 weeks later it is still noticeable and seems to be increasing in strength. The room had an original oil base semi gloss on the walls and were washed then sanded lightly before applying the paint. It appears that the first batch of paint was a bad batch as I had painted the rest of the house in an oil base semi gloss and the smell was not noticeable after a few days. Is there any way of getting rid of the bad smell as staying in the room for any length of time results in sore eyes and mild headaches.
Answer:
Talk to your house insurance people and ask them to recommend one of the contractors who does post-fire work for them. These folks have a variety of products they use to cover up some pretty persistent odours and I think they'll be able to help you. I don't know where you're located and many jurisdictions have their own dictates as to what may be used for situations like this.
