Question:

I have a new solarium which was built using those concrete 'tubes'. Does this statement give you any idea of my knowledge base on this topic? Use the K.I.S.S. principle please in your response! I want to get at the 'gardening and grassing' around it. The earth under the solarium is covered with a black plastic and the distance from the ground to the base of the room is about a foot or so. The size is 10X18 ft. What do I use to close off the open area under the room before I do the flower beds?

Answer:

You'll do well to dig a trench all around the solarium so that you can attach a two-foot wide sheet of galvanized, expanded sheet metal (screening like that used on houses before stucco is applied) with staples. Let the whole two feet of it hang down so animals don't get tempted to dig under it. You can then back fill it and garden to your heart's content.
