We have a house, built for us in 1972-73. It is on clay soil. Over Saturday night and Sunday morning, we got torrential rains - about 4 1/2 inches in a very short period. When we got up on Sunday morning, the basement floor was covered in water. Some had come down the chimney but most had come through two corners of the house. We wonder whether the eaves troughs just couldn't handle the deluge or whether the walls need excavating and refinishing. We did one wall last fall and it was totally dry. Please advise. We are very fearful of what will happen when we get more rain. The ground is saturated now. The sump pump is still running, over twenty-four hours after the rain has stopped.
Answer:
One of the reasons your two walls leaked is because you did only one wall last year. All the water from it now ends up going to the two adjoining walls and I think you'll end up doing all walls before you get satisfaction.
