Question:

Could you advise me on the need to replace all the clay in the driveway rather than just the top two feet. One of the contractors says that because I will disturb the clay during the waterproofing process, I should remove all the clay on the drive way and replace it with gravel or I would never have a good drive way; he thinks the clay all the way down the driveway will shift over time. Another contractor thinks that only the top two feet of the driveway clay needs to be replaced. The difference in cost is hefty and I am not sure which one to choose.

Answer:

If you're going to replace all the clay in the driveway, you can dig half way to China to do it. Believe me, two feet is plenty.
