I have a house built in clay. It is on a wood foundation, approx. 3.5 feet below grade and has had no problems at all. I am thinking of attaching a 10x10 sun room to the house. I want it to be winterized, warm, stable, etc. The problem is that I cannot get a machine in to remove the clay in order to do a similar foundation as the house. I heard your sona tube idea on your show and wanted to know if this technique would work for my application, without getting any differential movement, house to addition. As I understand it, I would attach one wall of the addition to the house, then place a sona tube at the 2 outside corners. Then set my main floor, and build up from here.
Answer:
There really isn't any way to get away from settling because it takes eight years and your addition would have to go through that. The house already has, so some movement would take place but the sona tube idea I mentioned on the show would be about the best route to go no matter what.
