Question:

I live with my backyard backing onto a busy street. I find it can be very noisy. I have tried sealing the windows and using foam backed blinds. I was thinking of planting some trees in my backyard but that's where the problem is. My back yard is only about 10 ft long and I was worried root growth could damage my house. What kind of tree would you suggest or is a tree the right answer?

Answer:

The trees are a good idea but I don't know how much good they'd do in a yard that narrow. You might be better off with a solid fence such as you see along many throughways crossing the city. You'll have to stay within the parameters of height restrictions too but they appear to work better than anything else.
