Question:

I am planning to paint our basement floor, and I am not sure whether to use an alkyd or latex paint. Our house is one-and-a-half years old and we want to paint the basement floor so it is easier for our kids to play down there and not track so much dust back upstairs. In about 3-5 years, we plan to finish the basement. Would greatly appreciate your advice as to the advantages and disadvantages of alkyd versus latex paint; all I know is that alkyd is more durable and latex less smelly and less likely to bubble or peel.

Answer:

If your plans are to put down tile or sheet flooring, why bother with any kind of paint? Painting is a 4-step method and rather time taking and costly compared to sealing the concrete to accomplish exactly your needs and that's done in one step at a far reduced price.
