I'm sure you've been hearing this all summer long this year. We've had a real blight of earwigs - eating most of my plants - have used the soaps spray we bought at the nursery (four spray bottles). They still persisted - we then used Raid (hated to, but I've lost most of my garden) - they still persist right up until yesterday - I lifted some plants from a planter and they literally fell out - seem to be starting all over. What can I do???? Please help. Appreciate your time, Vi Mann

Vi,
Thanks for your e-mail. Although earwigs are kind of yucky to look at, they don't normally do a lot of damage to plants. They seem to be opportunists, taking advantage of damage caused by other pests. However, it sounds like you really have an infestation.
The safest way to control hard-bodied insects like earwigs is to use a product called diatomaceous earth (DE). This is a chalk-like substance which you apply to the soil around your plants and around your planters. The powder is actually tiny sharp shells that cuts up the insects exoskeleton and blocks its breathing holes.
Although it isn't toxic, DE can also be abbrasive to human lungs so when you apply it, use a dust mask.
You should see control quite quickly.
The other option is to build your own trap which you can then dispose of. Use a low container like a pie plate or tuna can. Place fish oil or oil-soaked bread pieces into the container. You'll soon get large numbers of earwigs which you can then get rid of in the garbage or move elsewhere.
