Question:

I live in the middle of an adult-style bungalow townhouse block, brick exterior and firewalls between each unit (should block permeation of odours, right?). The neighbour is a heavy smoker and I notice smoke permeating in my house even though I keep the windows and doors closed. I'm wondering if it could be somehow from the exhaust fan in the kitchen (their fan and mine are about a foot apart on the roof or somehow through the furnace fan (a towel right under a bathroom vent really smells of smoke. Or could something not be connected that should be? I'm allergic to smoke and this is problematic for health on top of being annoying.

Answer:

Tobaco smoke is very permeating and about the only people I know of who could possibly do something about are those involved in the automobile de-odourizing business. Once fabrics like you find in pillows, mattresses, etc. are contaminated by it, it's not easy to get rid of.
