Question:

We have a cabin in northern Saskatchewan. Unfortunately, a woodpecker has decided to spend the last few winters making huge holes in the cedar siding! He is now winning with approximately 600 holes to his credit! The more holes he makes, the more little bugs fly in to make their homes and away he goes again! We are considering residing - do we need to remove the old siding or can we side over top? Is there a product that will stop this woodpecker from eating the rest of the cabin?

Answer:

Woodpeckers make noise in spring to attract mates. They make noise on wood to get at bugs and the like. I get the feeling that rather than having the little bugs flying out, you have a lot of them living in there. You may have to take off the siding and don't be surprised if you find nests of creepy crawlies under it. If that doesn't work, your local nursery should be able to suggest something to discourage them.
