I have ants! Big black ones, in basement and in kitchen. Basement is finished, suspended ceiling etc. When I lost the house (tornado 1994) 2 nests were found during demolition, after rebuilding I thought the problem was solved, but they are back with vengeance! I have tried poison (liquid, white powder) sprayed the foundation regularly but they still persist. Is there something else I can try before I call in the exterminator? I realize that what I see is only the tip of the iceberg as the majority of the ants are still in the nest! First a tornado then my house will be carried away by ANTS!
Answer:
Actually, your first call should have been to the exterminators because they (and only they) know how to get to the queen. These are carpenter ants and no matter how many of them you get rid of, as long as the queen is there, they keep coming back. When ants find a food source, the reconnaissance team leaves a chemical trail back to it so the workers can get there and find their way back. The exterminators have products that encourage and accelerate this process. By the time the queen and her immediate workers go belly up, the others are long gone.
