My son has an old farm home with rubble wall foundation and a basement crawl space of stone and earth (Perth, Ontario area). The basement part is relatively damp. He has added an adjoining extension with a good basement. The problem is mold, which has been diagnosed as a possible cause of allergies in my grandchildren. I think this old foundation area could be the cause of the mold. How can we clean it up should this be the cause of the mold?
Answer:
You can be sure the moulds are at least a major cause of the allergies and cleaning it up means insulating and then applying vapour barrier in a way that won't permit any of the dampness to get into the crawl space because from there you cannot prevent it from getting into the living cavity.
