Over the years, our cottage is 'settling'. I can repair the cracks in the drywall realitivly easily but I think I'm going to have a problem with the doors. Right now they do not close as they should. I planned on just shaving (cutting) the doors so that they will fit back into the frames. Is there an easy way of 're-setting' the door frames without a major undertaking?
Answer:
You can take off the trim around them and re-shim the jambs. Don't hammer the finishing nails back through the soft wood. Rather, pull them right through so you won't have much to repair when you're done. This means you might not even have to take them off the hinges. Remember, shims are never used singly - one from each side keeps the jamb flat.
