Question:

You said there was a special tool that you would use to nail through the carpet and underlay into the joists to fix the creaks and snaps. What is the tool called and where could I rent one? I tried the inexpensive method you told me about, but it did not go as planned and my wife was freaking about wrecking the carpet.

Answer:

There is no possible way of wrecking the carpet with finishing nails and if they don't do the trick, your problems might go beyond the sub-floor/joist. The tool I was talking about will be available at a good hardware store and what it does is the same thing as the nails but it automatically breaks the screws off at floor level.
