Question:

Anyway, I have just bought a house and we have to rip up the carpet on the stairs. I'm pretty sure that the stairs aren't wood and are some sort of MDF material. Anyway, we've checked around on prices for carpet and installation and it may be too expensive to do for us right now. We have to get the carpet up before we move into the house because the previous family had cats and I'm allergic. I was wondering if it is possible to prime and paint the stairs then get an attractive runner for them. Can I stain the stair if it isn't wood? and How would I install the runner?

Answer:

You certainly can prime and paint the composite board that may be there. The runner is attached by way of rods that hold it against the riser of each step. Each end of the rod slides into an eye screw and this is very dependable (plus recyclable later) as its been used for decades if not centuries. It ain't going to be cheap though. The only other way I know of is staples and that's cheap.
